Highlights of the Spring 2001 Meeting of ABCD, 10–11 May 2001

Abstract

At this year's Spring Meeting of the Association of British Clinical Diabetologists, Consultant Diabetologists from all over the UK were updated about and discussed the Association's rapidly growing affairs, including the recently conducted landmark Survey of Secondary Care Diabetes Services within the United Kingdom, a new ABCD Distinction Awards Advisory Service and the first ABCD National Study Day for Specialist Registrars (SpRs). The decision was made at the meeting to admit final‐year SpRs to full membership of the Association and to create two new categories of membership, for Associate Members and Honorary Members respectively. Delegates also listened to state‐of‐the‐art clinical lectures and debates on Current Dietary Advice for Diabetes, Pancreas Transplantation, the Birmingham Ladywood Project, Salt and Hypertension and the Pathogenesis of Diabetic Microangiopathy, but the high point of the meeting was undoubtedly a fascinating and unique case study of ‘Olympian diabetes’, jointly presented by Sir Steven Redgrave, the subject of the study, and his diabetologist, Ian Gallen.
