Moving to adult care
Authors
Abstract
The transfer from paediatric to adult diabetes care is often stressful for young people with insulin‐dependent diabetes mellitus (IDDM) and their parents. Since 1984 we have been conducting an after‐hours clinic for IDDM patients aged 18–30 years. Eleven criteria for an appropriate IDDM clinic were identified and evaluated, using a 10cm Likert scale, by clinic attendees and the clinic staff. The results indicate that our clinic is meeting the expectations of our young IDDM patients, but privacy during consultations could be improved.
