Genetic testing in maturity onset diabetes of the young (MODY) – practical guidelines for professionals
Authors
Abstract
Diagnostic and predictive genetic testing is possible in up to 80% of maturity onset diabetes of the young (MODY) families. Diagnostic genetic testing allows confirmation of MODY and defines the subtype. This allows appropriate advice regarding treatment and likely clinical course to be given. Those undergoing genetic testing should have the opportunity to discuss the implications of the tests and their possible reactions. If HNF‐1α is identified, patients on insulin from diagnosis may benefit from a trial of sulphonylureas. This article provides the first specific guidelines relating to the provision of genetic testing in MODY. Copyright © 2003 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.
