First, the statistics. This year's EASD meeting on 28 September—2 October was the largest ever, with 10 039 delegates from over 80 countries taking part—including, it should be noted, Miss America (Nicole Johnson), a person who has not allowed her diabetes to stand in the way of her successful and busy life. It was the largest congress on diabetes ever held—twice the size of the last American Diabetes Association meeting—and the general interest in the research and clinical presentations was reflected in the fact that 105 journalists attended.
